Indie Game Month with Intel: a Postmortem

A whole month of indie game events has finally come to a close - and it was an absolute blast! In conjunction with Intel's Code for Good and Achievement Unlocked programs, we pumped out 4 awesome events spanning over 20 days of content. Here's some of the highlights from each event.

Intel Game Camp Students from UAT and DeVry University collaborated with Intel mentors and Game CoLab members in 2-week crash course on game development. Participants walked through creating a solid game design, learned about Javascript POC, and got hands on experience with XDK to mobile. Participants even got the opportunity to show of their newly created games at the Arizona Video Games Showcase.

GameLaoding Screening Hosted at DeVry University, we invited the public to a special screening of the new indie game documentary, GameLoading. The filmmakers even dropped in via Skype for an audience Q&A!

Intel - Phoenix Comicon 2015 Game Jam A game jam at Phoenix Comicon?! Yeah, we did that! Intel mentors helped participants crank out playable demos in just 24 hours. After completion, the games earned a spot at the Arizona Video Games Showcase. One game even emerged as an award winner - Ski Vector walked away with an award for Excellence in Audio! It was excellent to see such a polished and unique soundtrack take shape in 24 hours.

Arizona Video Games Showcase The Grand Poobah - the culminating event of the entire month. We had the amazing opportunity to host 20 local developers in a showcase at the Hyatt Regancy as a part of Phoenix Comicon! We pulled quite the crowd and got an excellent public response. The quality that the local devs brought to the event was superb. You can check out AZ Tech Beat's coverage here. Intel added a competitive spin to the showcase by offering up some great prizes, too. The award winners below all received Amazon prizes thanks to Intel. Be sure to click the links and check out these award-winning devs!

This was an awesome (seriously, awesome) month of events. Thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated Phoenix game development with us! Of course, thank you to all of the developers that rallied together to make the Showcase such a success, too! Last but not least, thank you to Brad and Chris from Intel for all of their support, resources, and constant evangelism for the valley game dev community!

Be sure to join us on Meetup and follow us on all the social medias for more event goodness!

Cheers, Austin Community Manager
